Bring something to share

By sharing something, whether it's food, art, music, a unique skill, or a simple trinket, you actively engage in creating a vibrant and interactive environment. It enriches the overall experience for everyone involved, promoting a culture of generosity and gratitude. Sharing creates a positive cycle of reciprocity, inspiring others to do the same and reinforcing the spirit of community and mutual support that is fundamental to the Burning Man ethos.

The Basics

  • You need a mug/a cup to be offered drinks. Find one that’s easy to keep a lid on and won’t spill. Also, make sure it has a hook to attach to your belt or backpack.
  • You will also need an ID to be offered a drink.
    • Print yours and tape it on your mug.
    • Print it and tape it on your bike with your playa name and camp name/address.
    • Keep a physical copy in your backpack and at camp.
  • Have a camel bag or a water bottle at all times with you.
  • A flashlight/ headlamp and a fixed lamp for your tent.
  • Bring earplugs to sleep.
  • Lotion for hands and feet.
  • Baby wipes to clean your face.
  • A pair of goggles. Most first-timers bring fancy goggles because they saw cool pictures of Madmax. You want EFFICIENT goggles: not tinted and large area of protection. They will only be used during sandstorms. Sandstorm are no joke! And often at night. You won’t care how fancy you are when they hit you.
  • Bandana/shall for sun and sandstorm protection.
  • Bins for everything you bring: one for clothes, one for shoes, one for jewelry, one for food. That will keep your stuff a little cleaner.
  • A comfy chair
  • A bike. You can decorate your bike if that makes you happy (highly recommended), but you have to equip your bike with lots of lights. This is for your safety, Artcars are driving all night long on the Playa, and the light on your bike is the only way they are going to see you.
  • A tent, a mattress, and coolers
  • Costumes

Clothes / Costumes

Keep it simple! Keep it Fun!

Avoid anything that moops (feathers, cheap fur, etc.).

Avoid open toes shoes, or at least have the option to switch.

At least have:

  • Comfy shoes
  • One/two. Feel good outfit for the day. This is your opportunity to express yourself. Be creative and fun. You will spend a lot of time biking; it's often really hot, so plan accordingly,
  • Two outfits for nights. One for cold nights, one for normal nights/warmish). Night can get really cold!
  • A hat
  • Sunglasses

This is about self-expression, most people end up with fewer and fewer clothes, and that's great. It is hot in the desert! Don't feel pressured by it. Be You, Or even better, Be the You you can't be at home.

Toiletry

  • For your showers, we recommend: a baby pool to collect the water (remember to leave no trace) and a pump sprayer to efficiently rinse.
  • Leave-in conditioner
  • Nasal spray
  • Eye drop
  • Tissues
  • Lotion (hands & feet)
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Baby wipes
  • Toilet paper

Food

We are foodies and always go out of our way to cook delicious meals at Burning Man; if that's you, too, go for it. Keep in mind that you'll have limited resources, energy, and water to clean.

Here is a short list of essentials:

  • A Table and chairs
  • A stove with gas
  • Pots/pans, plates, and utensils
  • Large Ziplocs to store your food
  • 2 large coolers (one for drinks, one for food) + insulated cover for the cooler
  • Extra drinks to share (It’s going to be hot, bring lots of comforting drinks)
  • Lots of snacks
  • Super easy to cook/clean meals: dehydrated meals, canned food, pre-made that just need to be warmed up

Water

You won't find water at Burning Man. Some camps offer showers, shampoo, foot washing, or drinking water, but don't rely solely on it. Bring at least 1 gallon per day per person to drink and 1 gallon per shower.
